I read in the Daily Echo today that the Police have officially re-opened their investigation into abuse suffered by children at Winton House.

I am acting for a client who suffered sexual abuse at Winton House as well as other institutions.  The tragedy is that these young people were already vulnerable and already had problems which should have been dealt with. Instead they were preyed upon and taken advantage of by the very people to whom their care and wellbeing had been entrusted.

Many of these children came to see the abuse as part of normal and everyday life. They had no-one to turn to. The people they should have been able to turn to for help were the very people who were abusing them. Now, years later as adults, they are still suffering the physical and psychological consequences, often turning to alcohol or drugs to blot out the memories and help them to cope. In the wake of the Jimmy Saville scandal more and more of these stories are quite rightly coming to light and hopefully many of the perpetrators will be brought to justice. I also hope that the tide is turning so that these scenes are never repeated.
