A campaign has recently been launched by APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) which aims to reduce the number of patients suffering from pressure sores.

The campaign was initiated in June and calls for an improvement of care and greater consistency in hospitals and care homes, after it was revealed that in British hospitals in 2012/13 there were more than 5,000 critical pressure ulcers.

There was also concern that the standard of care varied widely across the country, meaning that patients faced a postcode lottery as to the standard of care they received.

A 5 point plan of action has been drawn up which seeks to address issues such as training, which will hopefully help to prevent avoidable injuries in future.

It is thought that around 95% of pressure sores are avoidable and I am aware of several cases in recent months where clients have sought compensation for injuries which need not have occurred.
