Last week, on 8th and 9th October 2015, Patricia Wakeford, Gemma Osgood and I had the privilege of attending the 2015 APIL clinical negligence conference.

This year's conference was held in Brighton and focused on the fields of neurology and neurosurgery, with particular emphasis on brain and spinal injuries. Both of these all too often have a catastrophic effect on the lives of patients and their families.

We were treated to lectures from a large number of leading medical experts, some of whom we have worked with on previous and current cases, and all of whom discussed their particular field of expertise with passion and a real understanding of the impact that these injuries can have upon the lifestyle of those affected.

A significant amount of time was spent considering the medical and technological advances that have been made over the past 10 years or so, enabling physicians to better understand the underlying cause of a patient's symptoms and to find new ways in which the resulting functional impairments can be treated and mitigated. This was encapsulated by the Key Note speech given on Thursday by Dr Kevin Fong, Consultant anaesthetist and expert in space medicine.

As well as being able to learn from eminent clinical experts, the conference also provided an opportunity to talk with other experts within the industry who are regularly involved in the pursuit of clinical negligence claims, such as case managers, accountants, financial advisors and funders.

Of course, the other key feature of this conference and similar conferences is the opportunity to discuss current issues with other like-minded clinical negligence lawyers, whose professional lives are focused on trying to help those who have had the misfortune to suffer additional injury as a consequence of substandard clinical care. We have common goals of seeking to enable our clients to live as independent and as full a life as possible, as well as improving patient safety in the longer term.

Overall it was a fantastic conference and I look forward to next year!
