Testicular torsion

“You were a great comfort.”

Mr.H Southampton
The Clinical Negligence team at BL Claims Solicitors has considerable experience with testicular torsion claims, and are experienced in dealing with the sensitive issues involved for you, or your child. We are often able to give a good indication of the prospects of a compensation claim being successful after reviewing the medical records.

Testicular torsion is an acutely painful, sudden onset condition, in which the blood supply to the testicles is cut off. It primarily affects adolescent boys and infants. If surgery is undertaken quickly enough, it is usually possible to save the affected testis. However, delay in treatment can mean that by the time surgery takes place the testis has become necrotic and the patient requires an orchidectomy (removal of testicle). Particular risk areas in medical practice where allegations of failure to diagnose torsion of the testis occurs are General Practice or Accident and Emergency departments. Misdiagnosis or delay in recognising the symptoms of testicular torsion as a surgical emergency can lead to medical negligence compensation claims.

It is because of the nature of the condition, clients often find it difficult to talk about what has happened to them. We appreciate that this is a very personal injury that can have quite a traumatic psychological effect on the individual, affecting their confidence and sometimes their relationships. If you prefer to have a male lawyer, we can assign your case to one.

Often, our clients are hoping to be able to undergo surgery to have a prosthetic testis inserted to achieve a more acceptable cosmetic result and, because of their recent experiences, would prefer to undergo private surgery. If we are able to secure an early admission of liability, it may be possible to obtain an interim payment for private prosthetic surgery to take place.

It is also well recognised that torsion of the testis on one side is a risk factor for it to occur on the other. It is therefore particularly important that when the affected testis is operated upon then the one on the other side is also fixed to prevent that one from twisting at a later date.
